as it usually is when i have a roommate, so i ought to be using this blog to record what's on the tube in the background cuz that is what this blog is for... coming home from softball and shopping and eating, i found star trek: first contact on and watched the second half of it while i ate and now i'm choosing (or switching) between ncis, which is a staple in the background tv diet around here these days, and total recall a favorite film for the familiarity and memory and other reasons, and several ncaa basketball tournament final games on several other channels... if i get bored there are hundreds of other channels to explore, but typically i choose only a handful for the background tv at any given moment...
i was not surprised by idol this week, except maybe that i actually found time to watch some of it... last night i wasn't home, so i don't know what was on the tv if it was on... and so, there's the btv report for today, whenever today may be...

remembering snl
a long long time ago (and i don't mean american pie or even a linda ronstadt song), i found myself semi-wasted after a tour in the us army where drugs were easier to get than sex, but just barely, and both were a lot easier to get than arrested for carrying a gun on a white house tour, but that’s beside the point… where was i?... ah yes, remembering snl… i started this entry an hour and a half ago… and with jim carrey as the guest host, i decided to watch… a bit earlier i was on my way out to play games with friends when the jets-colts game got interesting so i decided to continue watching and by the time it was over, i decided to cook some dinner here and watch snl…
it was a long long time ago (is this where we came in?) when i was sitting home, or perhaps i was in pompano beach visiting friends, memory is not perfect and location was not as important as the memory of the feeling, the gleefully awakening of the feeling of revelation when something new emerges from the ether (or everything outside the head) as i watched the first episode of saturday night light… that first show was followed by week after week of the most different comedy i had ever seen on television and for almost two years i was drawn to watch every almost saturday night…
tonight was, as has been the case every year since those first shows, disappointing, but in that it rekindled memories of the original gleeful feeling, it was well worth staying home for… and here i am now, remembering another fond memory, lays barbecue potato chips, while eating the baked version thinking how lays baked barbecue potato chips taste much like pringles, which is quite disappointing as well… with each passing year everything seems to be more and more processed, less and less fresh, and i wonder how long the human race can continue like this…
and when will the next gleeful awakening feeling of revelation come? :)

college football
it's not as much fun as it used to be, especially watching along, but that is partially because it is early in the season and i have no ties to any school in particular and i am not playing any fantasy college games and the commercials test my limits for banality and the games are a bit boring cuz some of the popular teams are way overrated (at least in this area) and there is a wonderfully needy doggy begging non-stop for attention and exercise and sitting home along with him means he expects constant interaction and looks so sad when i want to write or watch tv or just close my eyes and relax in the living room, but he is lovable, even as a constant shadow :)
the best thing about the college football saturday was the food, new york deli ordered in by mail for the first time in more than ten years... it was an impulse late thursday night after someone on facebook reminded me that katz's deli on houston did mail order via fedex... the rest of the day was boring blowouts and a few close games where coaches made big mistakes (spurrier putting in a freshman who is not as good a passer as the veteran who was having a great game until the first five minutes of the fourth quarter) for the last two drives of the game when they were eight points behind was just dumb ego and the freshman threw two interceptions to prove the bad coaching move was a bad coaching move)...
and the commercials, sheesh, they are worse than ever... i am obviously watching too much tv lately, so that's gonna change... how have you been? :)
